PURPOSE
A portion of the Big Creek Interceptor (BCI) will be rehabilitated in order to restore its structural integrity and hydraulic capabilities.
LOCATION
The portion of the Big Creek Interceptor to be rehabilitated begins near the intersection of West 23rd St. and Henninger Rd. and continues through Cleveland, Brooklyn Heights, and Cuyahoga Heights to its discharge point at the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Center. From W. 23rd and Henninger, the BCI proceeds eastward to the intersection of W. 15th St. and Ardoyne Ave., turns southward along W. 15th St., and then continues southeast through a ravine between the south end of W.15th St. and the intersection of South Hills Blvd. and Irving Ave.
The BCI then proceeds eastward along Irving Ave. until turning southeast through a valley south of Irving and west of Bern Ave./W. 10th St. It continues southeast and passes under Jennings Rd., the Jennings Freeway, Spring Rd. and Van Epps Rd., and then crosses a ravine on a trestle southeast of Van Epps. After crossing the trestle, the BCI heads eastward underground, then turns northeast, crosses the Cuyahoga River and the Ohio and Erie Canal on a large trestle and finally continues underground to its terminus at the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Center in Cuyahoga Heights.
COMMUNITIES SERVED
The Big Creek Interceptor conveys flows from areas of Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights and Cleveland to the District's Southerly Wastewater Treatment Center.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project involves cleaning 13,900 feet of the existing interceptor sewer; sliplining 10,400 feet of existing 5'-0" to 6'-3" brick sewer with fiberglass reinforced polymer mortar pipe; applying epoxy coating to 2,150 feet of previously gunited, existing brick sewer; realigning a 220 feet of the existing sewer in the ravine between W. 15th St. and South Hills Blvd./Irving Avenue; replacing 90 feet of corrugated metal pipe with concrete-encased fiberglass reinforced polymer mortar pipe; replacing several drop structures; and rehabilitating manholes.
Work shafts will be constructed at the following locations to provide access to the interceptor for rehabilitation work: near the intersection of Valley Road and Ardoyne Ave.; in the ravine between W. 15th St. and South Hills Blvd./Irving Avenue; in the ravine between Garwood Rd. and Bern Ave./W. 10th St.; in easement near Spring Rd. and Hinckley Industrial Parkway; and at the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Center. Excavation will also be required for manhole rehabilitation.
