 Bryden-Farnsleigh Intercommunity Relief Sewer (BFRS)
PURPOSE
The Bryden-Farnsleigh Intercommunity Relief Sewer (BFRS) will be one of fourteen intercommunity relief sewer projects constructed by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) under the Heights 7B design contract. The BFRS system will relieve three Shaker Heights sanitary sewers at points near the community border with Beachwood, and will also provide a stub for future relief of flows from within Beachwood. This project will provide capacity necessary to eliminate sewer backups and basement flooding in this area.

LOCATION
BFRS is located in Cuyahoga County in the Cities of Shaker Heights and Beachwood. BFRS discharges into the Van Aken Relief Sewer (VARS) manhole 7BV-3B at the intersection of Farnsleigh Rd. and Halburton Rd., in Shaker Heights. From this point, the main leg of the sewer proceeds northward on Farnsleigh and Belvoir to S. Woodland Rd., then eastward on Woodland to Green Rd., then southward on Green to Bryden Rd.. A shorter leg extends from VARS manhole 7BV-3B westward on Halburton Rd. to the Shaker Heights/Beachwood community border.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The BFRS system will include 10,680 feet of 8-inch to 36-inch diameter pipe. Of this, about 2,300 feet will be constructed in tunnel, and the remainder in open cut. An intercepting structure on Bryden Road near Green Road will relieve 12-inch and 15-inch sewers having significant tributary areas to the north and east. Another intercepting structure on Belvoir Boulevard near Almar Drive will relieve an 8-inch sanitary sewer that drains a sewershed north of South Woodland Road. Intercepting structures and manholes will be mainly of precast concrete construction.

COMMUNITIES SERVED
Most of BFRS is located within the community of Shaker Heights, with a portion passing through Beachwood. The system will relieve flows from existing Shaker Heights sanitary sewers before they enter Beachwood, and will provide relief capacity for future connections to Beachwood sewers.

FUNDING SOURCE AND COST
The preliminary engineer's estimate to construct the sewer, based on a conceptual design, is $4,800,000.00. Another engineer's estimate will be prepared at a more advanced stage of design, when significant project issues have been defined. The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District will apply for a low interest loan for construction, from the Ohio EPA Water Pollution Control Fund.

SCHEDULE
The BFRS is intended to be advertised in the spring of 2004, with construction to begin in the summer of 2004.

DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE
At present, questions or comments should be directed to Mr. Brian Page, P.E., the Project Manager for design of the BFRS. He may be reached at NEORSD offices at 3900 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland; at phone number 216-881-6600; or by fax at 216-432-7395. After a Notice to Proceed is issued to the successful bidder, NEORSD will open a field office and assign a field representative to the project, who will become the project contact person.
