 Lakes and Rivers
Each wastewater treatment plant has an effluent point at which treated water is discharged back into rivers or lakes. At this point, major pollutants have been removed from the water and the liquid returns to its normal state through natural processes in rivers or lakes. For the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, these points of discharge are Lake Erie (for the Easterly and Westerly wastewater treatment plants) and Cuyahoga River (for the Southerly plant).

In its 30-year history, the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District has been a major contributor to the cleanup of Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie. Many of the improvements in the quality of water in the Cleveland area have resulted from District's efforts through its wastewater treatment plant and additional efforts working with nearby communities for watershed conservation and pollution control.
