Raw water is collected and routed to water treatment plants. At these plants, untreated water is made fit for consumption by various processes. A portion of the treatment process uses chemicals to disinfect the water, then other techniques are used to remove sediments, such as filtration beds and sedimentation tanks. The plants also act as major water reservoirs.
Lake Erie is the major water supply for the greater Cleveland area. Some outlying communities rely on well water for consumption. Water from Lake Erie is collected at "intakes" located about three to five miles from the lakeshore. The City of Cleveland Division of Water operates four treatment plants and a large distribution system comprised of approximately 5,000 miles of water mains, pump stations, storage tanks and water towers.
