The Westerly Interceptor Box Culvert is a reinforced concrete structure built approximately 90 years ago. It is approximately 500 feet long and runs from the point of convergence of the Westerly and Walworth Run Interceptors on the south side of the West Shoreway (at West 58th Street) to the diversion chamber at the Westerly Wastewater Treatment Plant's Headworks Building.
The box culvert has deteriorated significantly over its service life, and is also now of insufficient capacity, so it often carries wet weather flow to the wastewater plant under pressure. The purpose of Contract WIBCR will be to either abandon the box culvert and replace it with a higher capacity sewer, or to repair the box culvert and augment it with a new sewer to achieve the same increase in capacity. Construction costs, utility interferences, traffic control concerns, constructability concerns, and other issues will determine whether replacement or repair & augmentation is the preferred design option.
